Our Mission
Astronomy should be accessible to everyone. But choosing your first telescope is confusing. Marketing claims are misleading. Sponsored reviews are biased. Department store telescopes are toys dressed up as serious equipment.
We started Telescope Trove to solve this problem. Our goal is simple: give you accurate, tested, honest information so you can make confident decisions about astronomy equipment. Whether you are buying your first telescope or upgrading to a serious astrophotography rig, we have been where you are and we know what works.

James Orion has been an active amateur astronomer for over 10 years. He has tested over 100 telescopes, binoculars, and astrophotography accessories under real night skies across the US Southwest. His reviews are based on hands-on observation sessions at dark-sky sites, star parties, and his own backyard — not spec sheets or marketing materials.
James holds memberships in the Astronomical League and multiple local astronomy clubs. He regularly attends star parties, public outreach events, and equipment swap meets where he tests and compares equipment side by side. He has observed from Bortle 3 dark-sky sites in West Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona, giving him a deep understanding of how equipment performs under ideal conditions.

Our Editorial Process
Every article on Telescope Trove follows a rigorous 5-step process. We do not publish content until each step is complete.
Step 1: Research
Before testing any equipment, we research manufacturer specifications, compare competitor products, read user forums, and identify what matters most for real-world use. We build a test plan based on the questions real buyers ask.
Step 2: Field Testing
We take equipment to dark-sky sites and test it under real conditions. This means actual observation sessions with real targets — the Moon, planets, star clusters, nebulae, and galaxies. We log the date, time, location, Bortle rating, weather conditions, and specific objects observed.
Step 3: Documentation
We photograph results, record performance data, and write detailed observation logs. Every claim in our articles is backed by a specific test session with a specific piece of equipment under specific conditions.
Step 4: Fact Checking
Every factual claim is verified against manufacturer specifications, authoritative astronomy sources (NASA, Sky & Telescope, the Astronomical League), and our own field data. We do not make claims we cannot back up.
Step 5: Publishing
Content is reviewed for accuracy, readability, and usefulness before going live. We write at a level that beginners can understand (Flesch-Kincaid Grade 6–7) while including the technical details that experienced observers need.

Our Testing Locations
We test equipment at multiple locations to evaluate performance under different sky conditions:
- West Texas Dark Sky Sites — Bortle 3 conditions, among the darkest skies in the US
- New Mexico Star Party Sites — Bortle 3–4 conditions, elevation above 7,000 feet
- Arizona Observing Sites — Bortle 4 conditions, dry air with excellent seeing
- Suburban Backyards — Bortle 6–7 conditions, where most beginners will observe
Testing under both dark and light-polluted skies helps us give realistic recommendations. A telescope that performs well under Bortle 3 skies may not work as well from a Bortle 7 backyard — and we tell you that.
